Science cases and R&D (Oct. 20th-21st)

The observational data collected from state-of-the-art astrophysical facilities constitutes our primary source of information towards a better understanding of the impact of the interstellar medium physics and chemistry on high redshift galaxies, star and planet formation in the Milky Way, or on the emergence of molecular complexity and life.  Opening up new regions of discovery space through increased sensitivities, angular and spectral resolutions, polarimetry, survey speeds, multi-wavelength multi-carriers studies is essential to understand these fundamental question of astrophysics.

Our community has access to key facilities which are and should be soon, fully operational (see the workshop “Approved or proposed facilities“).  However, the PCMI community needs to anticipate the future and to set ambitious observational challenges. This has to be done in the context of the withdrawal of the SPICA mission, of the proposition of new missions in the framework of ESA Voyage 2050, and of the setting new goals for established facilities such IRAM and ALMA.

The goals of the workshop are

  1. to brainstorm and develop the prospective at the heart of the PCMI science to help defining the future of existing facilities or the need of new ones;
  2. to explore the current status of R&D in instrumentation and to imagine futur missions that could serve our thematics.
